FORTIFIED Roofs in Louisiana, What You Actually Qualify For

The specification, the real cost difference, and a straight account of which grants and discounts apply to your parish and policy.

The standard

Four things that make a roof FORTIFIED

It is not a product or a brand of shingle. It is a set of installation requirements, verified independently, developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety.

Sealed roof deck

Deck seams taped or a fully adhered underlayment applied, so that if the shingles come off in a hurricane the deck still keeps water out of the house. This single item prevents most of the interior loss in a wind event.

Ring-shank nails, tighter pattern

8d ring-shank nails at a specified spacing into the deck and into the framing, which dramatically raises the uplift resistance of the sheathing itself.

Enhanced edge detail

Wider drip edge, sealed starter strip and locked-down perimeter, the edge is where wind gets underneath and peels a roof.

Third-party verification

An independent FORTIFIED evaluator reviews documentation and photographs before the designation is issued. The certificate is not something a contractor grants themselves.

Money

Grants, discounts and credits, stated carefully

This is the part where other sites overpromise. Programs change, funding rounds close and eligibility is parish-specific.

Insurance discount. Louisiana requires insurers to apply a discount for a designated FORTIFIED roof. The amount depends on your carrier and policy, and on some coastal policies it is substantial. Your agent can give you the exact figure, ask before the roof goes on, not after.

Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. This state grant program has offered up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof on an eligible owner-occupied home. Funding opens in rounds and the eligible parish list has changed between rounds. East Baton Rouge Parish has not been on the eligible list; some neighbouring parishes have. Verify the current round with the Louisiana Department of Insurance before you count on it.

Tax treatment. Louisiana has offered a state income tax deduction tied to retrofit spending in some years. Whether it applies to your situation is a question for your tax preparer, we will give you the itemised invoice and certification documents they need, and we will not tell you what your tax outcome will be.

What we do commit to. We are Fortified Roof Craft trained, we quote standard and FORTIFIED side by side on the same roof, and we produce the photo documentation the evaluator requires. If your parish and policy do not make the upgrade worth it, we will say so.
