Why a bathroom remodel in a slab home costs what it does

Almost every house here is slab-on-grade. That single fact explains most of the price gap between two bathroom quotes.

Nearly every house built in Greater Baton Rouge in the last sixty years sits on a concrete slab, with the drain lines cast into it. That single fact explains most of the gap between two bathroom remodel quotes on the same house.

Where the money goes

In a slab home, the fixtures you keep in place are cheap to change and the fixtures you move are expensive. Swapping a vanity for a wider one on the same wall is trim carpentry and a supply connection. Moving the toilet three feet means cutting the slab, excavating, re-routing drain line with correct fall, inspecting, re-pouring and re-tying the floor assembly, several days of work with an inspection in the middle of it.

Two quotes can therefore be thousands apart and both honest: one is keeping the plumbing where it is, the other is moving it. Ask which, before you compare totals.

Design around the drains, not against them

Most of what people want from a bathroom, a larger shower, a curbless entry, better storage, a double vanity, can usually be achieved without relocating the toilet. A tub-to-shower conversion generally reuses the tub drain in the same footprint, which is why it delivers the biggest visible change for the smallest structural cost.

When a slab cut genuinely is worth it: a bathroom too small to function, a layout where the door swing conflicts with the toilet, or an accessibility need for a curbless walk-in shower where the drain has to move to get the slope right.

The things that should not be optional

  • A proper waterproofing system behind the tile, sheet or liquid membrane, not just cement board and mastic.
  • Pre-slope and a bonded pan on any shower, so water reaches the drain instead of sitting in the assembly.
  • An exhaust fan ducted outside, sized for the room. In this humidity, a fan venting into the attic is a mould plan.
  • Blocking behind walls for grab bars now, even if the bars come later.

These are the items a cheap quote quietly omits, and they are the difference between a bathroom that lasts twenty years and one that fails behind the tile in five.

Timeline honesty

A full tile bathroom in a slab home is typically three to five weeks, and a slab cut adds a week or more including inspection. We schedule the water-off days in advance and tell you which ones they are, because losing a bathroom without warning is the part homeowners actually remember.

If you want a scope that separates "keep the plumbing" from "move the plumbing" so you can decide with real numbers, ask us for an estimate or read how we run a bathroom remodel.
